Science Lessons Mathematics Lessons
- Classification of organisms
- Main kingdoms of living things: bacteria, protist, fungi, plants, and animals (invertebrates and vertebrates)
- Interactions of living things
- Rocks and minerals
We will be learning each of these concepts through a variety of means including direct instruction with note taking, collaborative work with partners or teams on various activities in small groups, and a lot of hands on experiments and STEM based project learning opportunities. All crucial information will be recorded in the science sections of your binders including important notes taken using expository text reading strategies. These binders will be collected on a routine basis. In addition, pencil and paper tests, projects, and lab reports will serve as the main forms of assessments at the end of each chapter or unit. Finally, sixth graders are also given the opportunity to participate in the science fair. More information regarding that will be provided in December so that students can generate project ideas.
Math General Information
The text is published by Scott Foresman. We will study fractions and decimals, ratios and proportional relationships, positive and negative numbers, expressions, equations, geometry, and statistics. There will be hands-on materials and activities used to help reinforce concepts. Students are expected to do the daily homework. Homework quizzes will be every Friday beginning September 16th. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter, and no quizzes will be given on weeks that have tests scheduled. There will also be a quarterly exam given on the second to last week of each marking period. There will always be a class review before tests. Most classes will start with daily Simple Solutions work where independent time is given to work on problems that are then reviewed as a class. Students will be asked to keep notes, past quizzes and tests, and other math information in their binders. Binders will be graded periodically on content and organization.
Homework, chapter quizzes/tests, and Simple Solutions quizzes make up most of the quarterly grade for this class. Binder checks and the quarterly exams will make up the rest of the grade. Students will be using a Quadrant IV system of learning where the skill gets introduced in Quadrant I and have a problem or mastery objective in Quadrant IV.
