Science General Information
Please be sure you have your binder to be used for science! Students will be using the blue Glencoe science textbooks this year that cover the following topics:
- Human body systems
- Weather and climate
- Space exploration
- Sun, moon, and the Earth
- Solar system
- Stars and galaxies
- Parts of an atom
- The periodic table
- Chemical bonds
- Chemical reactions
We will be learning each of these concepts through a variety of means including direct instruction and notetaking, collaborative work with partners to process content knowledge, and various activities in small groups in the lab area of the classroom. All crucial information will be recorded in science spirals, including important notes on the left side of the open notebook and various ways of processing knowledge through questioning and student-generated input on the right side. These will be collected on a routine basis. In addition, pencil and paper tests, projects, and small reports will serve as the main forms of assessments at the end of each chapter or unit. Finally, seventh graders are also given the opportunity to participate in the science fair again this year. More information regarding that will be provided in December so that students can generate project ideas.
Math General Information
The text is published by Scott Foresman. We will study the number system, ratios and proportional relationships, modeling geometric figures as well as area and volume, expressions and equations, populations and sampling, and probability and simulations. There will be hands-on materials and activities used to help reinforce concepts. Students are expected to do the daily homework. Homework quizzes will be after every 4-5 assignments and given about once every two weeks. There will be a class review before quizzes and the occasional test. Most classes will start with daily Simple Solutions work where independent time is given to work on problems that are then reviewed all together. Quizzes are given after 4 lessons are completed, so that students can choose to complete the problems with which they are most comfortable.
Homework quizzes, chapter quizzes/tests, and Simple Solutions quizzes make up the quarterly grade for this class. Students will be encouraged to think and problem solve on a deeper level that the current curriculum reinforces.
Students who struggle are more than welcome to get extra help with me before or after school!
