It is hard to believe that we have completed our second week together as a school family! We have spent a lot of time practicing how we do things at SJV and in Kindergarten. We are working on how we do each job/task in order to create an atmosphere of independent learning. I believe that we are creating the best balance of whole group instruction and inquiry-based learning opportunities. We are learning about how to manage our workspace as well as the proper ways to set up our work areas as well as how to “restore” (clean up) our materials when finished.
We continue to learn about how we show Responsibility, Respect, and Perseverance. We are practicing to go to Mass by visiting the Chapel on the first floor. The reverence they show when we pass by our Chapel (Little Church, as I call it) is awesome!
In Religion we are learning about God as Creator of all things! We talked about our favorite Bible Story. We know that God created the heavens and talked about what we see in the night sky and the day sky.
As we review our colors, we are learning that red, blue, and yellow are Primary Colors and will be doing some color mixing activities next week to demonstrate that the other (secondary) colors are created by mixing these three colors.
We are counting to 100 using our number cards. We are stressing that they point to each number as we count to “train their brains” to associate the number word with each number symbol. Our first unit in Math is dedicated to 1-5 number sense. We will be learning how 1-5 looks like in a variety of ways (numeral, tally marks, ten frame, “how much”, how to properly form each number symbol).
Our first Reading Unit will be a review of letter recognition, rhyming, breaking words into syllables, etc.
In Social Studies we are meeting each of our friends via a “Getting to Know you Book”. Each book features one child. We draw our friend and ask them questions to get to know them better.
I have sent home a paper plate for you to use for you child’s Read and Grow Face. Please work with your child to decorate the front as their “face”. On the back, please record books that you read with your child. These are due back by October, but if they are ready before that, please turn them in. We will display them in our stairwell
Please turn in the forms that were included in the folder you received at our Back to School Night last Wednesday.
