Meet the Teacher! Thank you to the parents who came to the Meet the Teacher Meeting last evening. If you did not attend a packet of information will be sent home with your child today. Please read it carefully. If you have questions please contact me. Thank you!
School Forms: Each family was given an envelop with an emergency form, technology form, internet permission form, parent handbook form, and a concussion form. Please sign and return all forms by September 11th. Thank you!
Next Week: We will attend Mass on Thursday. Please remind your child of appropriate Mass behavior. It is such a blessing and an integral part of our Catholic education to attend weekly Masses. Later in the year the first graders will prepare and lead a school Mass!
Friday, September 8th is Special Summer T-shirt Day. Your child may wear a t-shirt that reminds them of something special they did this summer. Please make sure the t-shirt follows dress code specifications, no capped sleeves and should be tucked in. This is not a jean day, students should wear dress code pants or skirts.
Reading: Our first basal reading story is Max the Cat. Selection summary: Pam has to cope with habits of her cat, Max. In the process, she learns something new about relationships. Skills we will focus on include: identifying an classifying short "a" words, complete sentences, reading with fluency, identifying rhyming words, making inferences, and predictions.
Phonics: The students will review partner letters: "Bb, Gg, Xx..."
Spelling: Your child's first spelling list came home in the first grade packet that was sent home from the Meet the Teacher meeting. The list will be posted here as well as sent home every Monday. We will work with these words during the week. The words are included in the reading selection for the week. If your child studies the spelling words they will be more successful reading the selection for the week as well as the leveled readers. The pretest will be given on Wednesdays and the final test will be given on Fridays.
Spelling list: can, pan, hat, mat, had, bad, one, give, this, likes
Handwriting: The students completed a "pretest" in which they wrote their name, letters they know, and a short creative writing piece. Next week we will practice partner letters, think about how we should sit, place the paper, and hold the pencil. We will also practice making vertical lines.
Math: Next week, the students will practice writing numerals 0-9, compare numbers through 5, review shapes, and begin thinking about patterns for numbers to 10.
Science: We will begin thinking about "What is weather?" We will go outside and think like weather scientists. As I'm typing this I am thinking about all of the people in Houston and the surrounding areas. My heart aches for them. I am sure you are keeping them in your prayers. I would love to think of someway to help the children and families there. If you have any ideas stop in and see me.
Social Studies: We will talk about Where We Live. The students will think about their neighborhood, learn about maps, community, state, country, and earth.
Religion: This week we have been practicing our prayers. The students also wrote a special prayer for you. Next week, we will learn how we belong to Jesus' church. From the bible story the Good Shepherd, your child will discove that Jesus calls us each by name to follow him.
Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend!
