HAPPY NEW YEAR! With the New Year the first graders and I will be talking about what a New Year's resolution is. They will think about what they may want to improve on for the New Year.
*Please make sure all students come to school with appropriate shoes for the day. Many students are wearing boots all day. This does not follow our dress code. Thank you!
*Many students have lost supplies since the beginning of the school year. They may need crayons, markers, glue sticks... Please ask your child if they need some new supplies. Thank you! :-)
Reading: The reading for this week is: "Let's Camp Out!" A family gets together and hits the trail. The children learn about setting up camp, making a fire, and cooking food outdoors. While reading this story we will review skills that we have learned throughout this basal. The students will think about animals that they might see while taking a hike during the day and at night.
Phonics: The students will work on the short "o" vowel sound.
Spelling: We will work with the spelling words during the week. The words are included in the reading selection for the week. If your child studies the spelling words they will be more successful reading the selection for the week as well as the leveled readers. The pretest will be given on Wednesdays and the final test will be given on Fridays.
Spelling list: These words came home last week. Due to the short week we will continue with them this week.
sticks, sun, fire, snow, twigs, mud, try under, old, eat
For an EXTRA CHALLENGE: solve, resolve, New Year's resolution
Students are not required to attempt the EXTRA CHALLENGE words, but some students need a challenge. :-)
Handwriting: Please practice handwriting with your child at home. If they are reversing letters please bring it to their attention and have them correct the reversal. This week we will work on the letters: u, s, b.
Math: This week in math we will connect models to symbols. Next, we will begin working with a ten-frame. We will represent numbers on a ten-frame, recognize numbers on a ten-frame, discover parts of ten, and find missing parts of ten.
Social Studies: We talk about Dr. Martin Luther King's wise words. We will study his famous speech and discover how his words helped change America.
Religion: We will think about how God is our loving Father. We will talk about how God created a beautiful world and everything in it. God loves everything he made. Everything that God made is called creation. The students will will write a list of people who love and care for them.
