Mrs. Borrow's Broadcast
February 13, 2018
We will be celebrating our Mardis Gras Party today, February 13th, at 1:45. Thank you to the parents who have sent in items for the celebration.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, February 14th we will be attending Mass for Ash Wednesday. The students may bring in their valentines to give to each other.
First Grade will lead Mass on Thursday, February 22nd. Please have your child wear a white shirt that day. If the boys would like to wear a tie that would be fine. Look for readings to come home this week. If your child has been selected to read please have them practice nightly. They should be able to read with no errors and with fluency. We will begin practicing at the church next week. Thank you!
I look forward to seeing you at Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday. If you need to reschedule for any reason, please call the office and Mrs. Deitering can reschedule for you. As always, I am here in the mornings before school, usually at 7:45.
We will continue learning about tall tales and the real person John Chapman. The students will learn about other tall tales such as Paul Bunyan and John Henry. The students will also read leveled readers throughout the week.
The students will draw a picture of an apple and describe what they see, hear, smell, and taste. I will bring in apples for the children to observe and eat. They will also write a letter to someone while they pretend to travel with Johnny Appleseed. Other skills we will focus on will be context clues, setting, character, cause/effect, and the long "a" sound.
We will continue Show and Tell until the end of the year!
The students will have a "show and tell day. Your child may bring in something they would like to show to the class. They should be able to tell why their item is special to them. Show and Tell dates: Monday: Maya, Gabby, Vivian, Alayja, Jamel; Tuesday: Laelle, Lydia, Ben, Lauryn; Wednesday: Zaiah, Javier, Nadia, Kaia, Thursday: Jayden, Sierra, Avery, Knox.
Phonics: The students will work on the short "a" vowel sound.
Spelling: We will work with the spelling words during the week. The words are included in the reading selection for the week. If your child studies the spelling words they will be more successful reading the selection for the week as well as the leveled readers. The pretest will be given on Wednesdays and the final test will be given on Fridays.
Due to the snow days and our short week we will continue to work with our current words.
Spelling list: rain, wait, tail, way, day, say, how, light, live, pretty
For an EXTRA CHALLENGE: February, Valentine's Day, President's Day
Students are not required to attempt the EXTRA CHALLENGE words, but some students need a challenge. :-)
Handwriting: Please practice handwriting with your child at home. If they are reversing letters please bring it to their attention and have them correct the reversal. This week we will work on the letters: p, s, b.
Math: We will work on subtraction from 0-12. We will also relate fact families to subtraction.
Science: We think about how something melts. The students will learn about the states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
Religion: We will talk about Lent and how we can practice Almsgiving. The students will write in a Lenten Reflection journal each day.
