Reading: Our next reading selection is: Ships. The students will read a non-fiction selection that includes pictures of different kinds of ships- a sailing ship, an aircraft carrier, and a steam ship. These ships lead up to a child playing with his own toy boat. Skills we will focus on include: reviewing sh, th, ck; short i and a sounds; informational story, main idea, and predictions.
Phonics: The students will work on the l, d, n, and w sounds.
Spelling: We will work with the spelling words during the week. The words are included in the reading selection for the week. If your child studies the spelling words they will be more successful reading the selection for the week as well as the leveled readers. The pretest will be given on Wednesdays and the final test will be given on Fridays.
Spelling list: ship, stop, go, bus, fast, map, look, this, one, what
Handwriting: Next week we will continue writing numerals and practice writing number sentences.
Math: Please purchase or make addition flash cards for numbers 0-9. We finished the week working on addition number sentences through 9. Many students needed the extra practice. We will move on to subtraction number sentences next week.
Science: The students will conduct an experiment that relates to our current reading story. They will use foil to make a "boat" and float it in water. They will add pennies to their boat until it sinks. Each child will record how many pennies sink their boat.
Social Studies: We will talk about different types of transportation.
Religion: We will continue to learn about the church. The church building is a place where the parish community gathers to celebrate Mass. Your child will learn that Jesus is present when member of our parish pray together. They will also learn about some of the sacred objects found in the church.
